Floating Fogs: An Enchanting Weekend in North Bengal’s Scenic Hills

Escaping the Summer Heat of Calcutta

As summer began in Calcutta, with temperatures soaring to nearly 40 degrees, escaping the heat became a necessity. The city’s sweltering conditions, marked by sweat-soaked clothes, umbrellas, sunglasses, and scarves, were overwhelming, especially in April. It was clear that a short break in the cool, serene hills of North Bengal was the perfect remedy.

Journey to Lolegaon: The Start of an Adventure

We embarked on our journey aboard the Dibrugarh Express, which took us to New Jalpaiguri. From there, we hired a car to Lolegaon, a picturesque hill station known for its tranquil atmosphere. Our first stop was at the 29th Mile for breakfast. With a serene lake beside the restaurant and clouds slowly gathering in the sky, we enjoyed our meal before continuing on the road.

As we ascended, the rising altitude and occasional drizzles made the drive increasingly exciting. By the time we approached Lolegaon, we found ourselves enveloped in thick clouds, reducing visibility to nearly zero. While thrilling, it was also a bit daunting. Nevertheless, we reached our hotel safely, unpacked, and took a much-needed nap. The heavy rain outside prevented us from exploring that day, but when the rain subsided at night, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view of Kalimpong City from Lolegaon.

Thrills of the Lolegaon Canopy Walk

Day 2 centred around the famous canopy walk in Lolegaon, a must-visit attraction in the region. The experience was nothing short of exhilarating. With the sky mostly covered in clouds and the temperature pleasantly cool, it was an ideal day to explore. The canopy walk, a suspension bridge through the dense forest, offered a unique and thrilling experience, giving us a chance to connect with nature up close.

After conquering the canopy walk, we indulged in a hearty hill-style breakfast, savouring momos, thaipo, and coffee. With our energy renewed, we set off for the second part of our journey: Rishap, via the charming town of Lava.

Exploring Lava: A Serene Stopover

Lava, a quaint town nestled in the North Bengal valley, offers a unique charm with its small houses, winding roads, and the serene Lava Monastery. The town’s landscape is both soothing and spectacular. After a brief visit, we continued our ascent to Rishap, our final destination.

Relaxation in Rishap: A Tranquil Retreat

Rishap, a peaceful village in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal, is the epitome of seclusion and tranquillity. The local Lepchas and Sherpas have established cosy cottage accommodations for tourists, making it an ideal spot to disconnect and relax. Our time in Rishap was spent in simple pleasures—checking into our rooms, lounging in the courtyard among vibrant local flowers, and soaking in the panoramic views of the hills.

Some of my friends even embarked on a short trek through the village the following day. As the evening set in, we gathered around a bonfire, singing songs and enjoying the serene ambience of the hills.

Cherished Memories of a North Bengal Adventure

This trip to the hills of North Bengal, filled with adventure, relaxation, and cherished moments with friends, remains one of the best tours of my life. The memories made in Lolegaon, Lava, and Rishap are ones I will treasure forever.
