Discover Shankarpur: A Secluded Beach Near Digha, West Bengal
Shankarpur is a hidden gem among West Bengal’s beaches, located just 14 kilometres from the popular beach town of Digha and about 185 kilometres from Kolkata. This serene sea beach, still largely undiscovered by tourists, offers the perfect escape to rejuvenate and unwind from the stresses of daily life.
Why Shankarpur Should Be Your Next Weekend Getaway
My first visit to Shankarpur was in October 2012, during the off-season. The beach was blissfully quiet, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in its natural beauty. Our group of seven friends set out on a 3-day trip, eager to leave behind the hustle and bustle of city life. We began our journey at Howrah Railway Station, taking a train to Ramnagar, the station before Digha, arriving by 10 AM. From Ramnagar, we hired a trekker to Shankarpur, passing through Choddo Mile (14 Mile), a junction that connects several beaches including Digha, Shankarpur, Mandarmoni, and Tajpur.
What Makes Shankarpur Unique
Upon reaching Shankarpur, we immediately headed to the beach. The sight that greeted us was breathtaking—a vast, unspoiled stretch of water meeting the horizon. The rhythmic sound of the waves, the cool sea breeze, and the warm sun created an idyllic setting. Unlike the soft white sands of Goa or the Andamans, the beaches here are firm, which is typical of West Bengal. These beaches have long been a favourite retreat for Kolkata’s residents, offering a chance to relax and recharge over the weekend. The beaches of West Bengal are known for their unique charm, with stunning sunsets and beachside shacks serving everything from hearty meals to light snacks.
Where to Stay in Shankarpur
Shankarpur is one of the less crowded beaches in Bengal, making it an affordable and peaceful destination. There are several budget accommodations, along with a few resorts for those seeking more comfort. We stayed at the Kinara Tourist Lodge, operated by Benfish. This small, cosy lodge offers decent food at very reasonable prices. For those who prefer dining out, there are a few basic restaurants serving traditional Bengali meals. Our 3-day stay in Shankarpur allowed us to disconnect from city life and enjoy the tranquillity of the sea, leaving us refreshed and ready to face daily challenges with renewed energy.
Things to Do in Shankarpur
Shankarpur is ideal for those who enjoy a laid-back beach experience. The primary activities here include relaxing on the beach, taking a dip in the sea, and exploring the nearby fishermen’s village to observe their daily routines. Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities, from capturing stunning sunsets to documenting the fishermen at work. The beach’s low tourist footfall ensures a peaceful atmosphere, making it perfect for a quiet getaway.
